Economists Have Predicted that the (RBA) Will Raise Interest Rates to 4.1%.

"Phil O’Donaghoe discusses inflation and RBA policy"

Australian mortgage holders may be heading into a challenging year, according to Deutsche Bank Australia’s senior economist Phil O’Donaghoe. His latest forecast suggests that persistent inflation and resilient consumer spending could push the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) to raise the official cash rate to 4.1%—a move that could significantly impact home loan repayments and borrowing capacity.

Inflation and Interest Rate Outlook

In a recent interview with the Daily Telegraph, O’Donaghoe responded to the December-quarter Consumer Price Index (CPI) update, which showed a 7.8% increase—slightly above expectations. He noted that household spending remained strong over the Christmas and New Year period, indicating that inflationary pressures may be more entrenched than previously thought.

“We now believe that a 3.35% terminal rate will not be sufficient to return Australian inflation to its target range this cycle,” O’Donaghoe stated.

Predicted Rate Hikes in 2023

O’Donaghoe expects the RBA to adopt a more gradual approach in 2023 compared to the aggressive hikes seen in 2022. However, he still anticipates four additional rate increases of 25 basis points each—scheduled for February, March, May, and August.

If the RBA raises rates at its next meeting on Tuesday, it will mark the ninth consecutive increase in the past 12 months, intensifying pressure on Australian mortgage holders already grappling with rising repayments.

What This Means for Homeowners

Higher interest rates directly affect variable-rate home loans, increasing monthly repayments and reducing borrowing power. Fixed-rate borrowers may also face a financial shock when their fixed terms expire and they’re forced to refinance at higher rates.
