Today, the Reserve Bank is convening to determine whether to maintain interest rates at their current level for the fifth consecutive month or to implement the 13th rate hike since May of the previous year in an effort to mitigate inflationary pressures. Simultaneously, the Australian stock market poises for a minor dip, mirroring the relatively stable performance observed on Wall Street. Will the Reserve Bank of Australia raise interest rates again amidst recession concerns?

Founder of The Switzer Report, Peter Switzer, has voiced his apprehensions. They are over the potential consequences of another rate hike by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). Switzer asserts that such a move could potentially plunge Australia into an unwanted recession.
These remarks come in the wake of economists’ projections, that the RBA may opt for an interest rate increase in the upcoming week. They take into account the recent surge in inflationary figures.
Speaking to Sky News Australia, Mr Switzer referenced CBA Head of Australian Economics Gareth Aird. Gareth points out that there is still a significant number of individuals locked into fixed-rate home loans, meaning the “mortgage cliff” they anticipated has not materialized.
The prolonged nature of the monetary policy lag, which is inherently substantial, has further exacerbated in the current economic climate. According to Gareth, this extended lag implies that RBA Governor Michele Bullock might choose to implement another interest rate hike. It could potentially precipitate a recession that Australia can ill afford at this juncture.
He emphasized that it would require considerable fortitude to defy the prevailing consensus among economists advocating for a rate increase. However, it also demands a significant amount of courage to take the gamble of potentially steering the economy towards a recession. Thus, the decision facing the Reserve Bank governor is undeniably a formidable one.
