Reserve Bank of Australia Keeps Interest Rates Unchanged in Latest August Update

Once again, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) keeps interest rates unchanged. They have opted not to make any changes to the cash rate, keeping it steady at 4.10% for the second consecutive month.

This unexpected respite contrasts sharply with the trend of increasing interest rates witnessed over the last 14 months. The period since May 2022 has seen a cumulative rise of four percentage points in interest rates.

Highlighting the rationale behind this decision, the RBA emphasized its belief that the elevated interest rates have been instrumental in cultivating a more sustainable equilibrium between supply and demand in the economy, a trend they intend to continue.

According to RBA Governor Lowe, the RBA’s Board has chosen to maintain the current interest rates once again this month. This decision will provide the Central Bank with additional time to assess the impact of the interest rate adjustments implemented thus far. It will ensure a return to the targeted inflation range within a reasonable timeframe remains a primary objective for the Board.”

Economists opinions:

Leading up to this announcement, economists held divided opinions, with a considerable number anticipating another 0.25 basis point increase. The extended pause is well received, finding favor among economists and the Australian population, particularly among homeowners grappling with the prospect of increasing mortgage rates.

CoreLogic research director Tim Lawless asserts that the decision to uphold the interest rates for two consecutive months holds positive implications for the broader housing sector. “The growing sentiment that interest rates may have reached their peak, or are close to it, could potentially elevate consumer confidence from the recession-like lows experienced over the past nine months,” Lawless noted.

He further explained, “Consumer sentiment and housing market activity often share an interconnected relationship. Typically, when confidence is low, home sales decline, and vice versa. Thus, an upswing in sentiment is likely to correspond with an increase in active buyers and sellers.”

Yet, Lawless advises caution and underscores that the ongoing pause doesn’t definitively signify the conclusion of the rate hike cycle. “The RBA is relying on a variety of key data points to inform their decisions. The possibility of another rate hike down the line remains viable,” he cautioned.

The RBA’s own statement supports this perspective, which leaves the door open for the potential of a near-future rate increase. Concluding today’s announcement, Governor Lowe affirmed the RBA’s steadfast commitment to achieving the inflation target.  He emphasizes that the board is prepared to undertake necessary measures to realize this goal.
