RBA Pauses Rate Hikes- For Now

The central bank of Australia, Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), has announced its decision to maintain the country’s cash rate at 3.6%. This move is a welcome relief for Australian mortgage holders who are facing consecutive rate hikes from the RBA. Over the past ten meetings, the Reserve Bank of Australia has raised the cash rate from an unprecedented low of 0.1% in April 2022 to 3.6% almost a year later.

In a statement, RBA Governor Philip Lowe stated that the Board had chosen to pause the rate hikes in order to evaluate the effects of the cycle on the economy. He added, “The Board acknowledges that monetary policy works with a delay. The complete impact of this substantial rise in interest rates is yet to be observed.”

“The Board’s decision to maintain the current interest rates this month is to allow more time to evaluate the effects of the recent interest rates hike and the overall economic outlook,” stated Lowe, RBA Governor.

Lowe concurred with many economic projections that inflation in Australia has reached its highest point. The CPI figure for last month dropping to 6.8%. He stated that “the central forecast is for inflation to decline this year and next. It will be to around 3% in mid-2025.” He added that medium-term inflation expectations are still firmly anchored and must remain so.

Conclusion

Lowe also mentioned the recent instability in global banking. He seeks to alleviate concerns by assuring Australians that our banking system is strong. “The recent issues faced by banks in the United States and Switzerland have led to increased financial market volatility. Plus a re-evaluation of the global interest rate outlook. We anticipate these developments to create further challenges for the global economy by tightening financial conditions.”

Lowe’s remarks also indicated that there could be further rate hikes in the future. The board indicated that there may be a need for tightening monetary policies to bring inflation back to the target level.
