The government anticipates that the incoming governor, Michele Bullock, brings a reform agenda for the RBA. The goal is to enhance transparency within the institution. Bullock’s appointment marks a historic moment as she will be the first female governor of the central bank. She succeeds Philip Lowe, whose tenure has come to an end.
The outgoing governor’s tenure has drawn considerable attention. It’s because the bank decided to raise rates from a historic low of 0.1 per cent to 4.1 per cent in 13 months. Finance Minister Katy Gallagher emphasized that Michele Bullock’s new position as the Reserve Bank governor would be subject to significant scrutiny. It’s especially in light of the challenges faced by mortgage holders amidst high-interest rates.

Senator Gallagher stated that Michele Bullock has a clear reform agenda. She possesses the necessary leadership skills to guide the institution over the next few years. Gallagher thinks making her appointment as Reserve Bank governor is incredibly important. Given the significance of this role, it will attract significant scrutiny. It’s because the decisions the governor makes have a direct impact on the lives of Australians.
RBA Meetings Schedule
Ms. Bullock’s appointment aligns with the bank’s acceptance of key recommendations from a government-ordered review earlier in the year. As part of these changes, the board will convene eight times a year instead of the current 11 to decide on interest rates. Although the meetings will be longer, Ms. Bullock will hold press conferences after each decision to explain the board’s ruling.
Senator Gallagher emphasized the necessity for increased transparency from the Reserve Bank, as highlighted in the review. She expressed confidence that incoming governor, Michele Bullock, is fully aware of the scrutiny that comes with the role. She is also aware of the responsibilities of the institution as a whole. Senator Gallagher praised Ms. Bullock’s extensive experience and exceptional qualities. She expresses her belief that she will excel in her position as governor of the Reserve Bank.

Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor welcomed the appointment of Ms. Bullock as the new governor, highlighting the crucial aspect of having a governor who maintains independence from the government.
Recently, Opposition leader Peter Dutton stated that the Coalition would not support the appointment of anyone with ties to governments from either side, implying that the individual should be free from any perceived biases.
However, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Treasurer Jim Chalmers clarified that Mr. Dutton’s statement did not influence their decision in selecting Ms. Bullock. They emphasized that she was chosen based on her suitability and qualifications for the position.
Mr. Taylor pointed out that data from various countries indicates that an independent Reserve Bank contributes to lower inflation rates. He expressed his belief that it would not be appropriate to appoint someone who was involved in formulating government policies as the governor.
