Former Bank of England Chief Forecast on Australian Interest Rates.

One of the most renowned central bankers issues a forecast on Australian interest rates. On Tuesday, Mark Carney, the ex-governor of the Bank of England, addressed business leaders in Canberra via video link. According to the Australian Financial Review, Carney emphasized the significant global challenge posed by surging inflation and cautioned that interest rates would need to remain restrictive until well into the following year.

Despite Australia’s resilient banking system offering a relatively advantageous position compared to other economies, Carney suggested that Australians might have to endure an extended period of tight monetary policy.

Speaking at the Committee for Economic Development of Australia conference, Mark Carney shared his perspective on monetary policy. He stated that once a sufficiently restrictive policy is in place, extending it well into the following year is likely to be the chosen strategy to address inflation and meet inflation targets.

Carney acknowledged that enduring a period of restrictive policy is a reality that economies have not faced in quite some time. In related news, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) recently implemented its 12th consecutive interest rate hike, raising it from 3.85% to 4.1%.

In order to bring inflation back within the desired range of 2 to 3 percent, Philip Lowe, the governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), stated that the central bank is considering the possibility of implementing additional rate hikes.
